Star Gazing with SkyXplore and Philippine Science Centrum

I really like watching the Moon and the stars but the thing is I don’t even know a constellation, haha. It’s hard to identify which star is which in the wide night sky specially when you’re not familiar in their positions. But two weeks ago we’ve been invited to witness the celebration of National Astronomy Week a star gazing event brought by SkyXplore and Philippine Science Centrum.

The National Astronomy Week promoted and celebrated astronomy awareness and appreciation held at the Marikina Riverbanks Amphitheater strategically to see the planet Jupiter, Venus and other nebulas and were opened publicly.

These two joined together to share their knowledge and telescopes to many people through exploring the world beyond the Earth. SkyXplore’s head astronomer Prof. Edmund Rosales personally gave lectures and astronomy trivia for the public.

It was an amazing experience, to see the Jupiter and its satellites.

Kieth did saw the Jupiter too.

Now I learned more about Astronomy, the stars that you can see in the Philippine night sky and trivia’s about the stars. The North Star and the Southern Cross are both visible in our night sky, Sirius is the brightest star, Betelgeuse is the armpit of Orion an more.

SkyXplore is the pioneering state-of-the-art Science road show program in the country that focuses on Astronomy through its Astronomy Awareness Program endorsed by the Department of Education. Committed to empower and educate schools and students in uncovering a Universe that is vast, varied, beautiful and living through the only available mobile digital planetarium in the Philippines.

SkyXplore includes the following activity for the students to learn and enjoy at the same time. Activity 1, the Space Dome, Mobile Digital Planetarium (the photo above). Activity 2, film showing, Avtivity 3, NASA Space Photos and Meteorite Exhibit and Activity 4 is the Ask-An-Astronomer interaction program. For the year 2011 they reached over 200,000 students and for this year they are targeting more.

For more information head out to their site,  www.skyxplore.com.phand Like them on Facebook, www.facebook.com/skyxplore that is administered by Prof. Edmund Rosales so feel free to ask questions about Astronomy and their Astronomy Awareness Program.

It was an overwhelming event for me and the kids, they also gave each kid a stuff toy before we left, we enjoyed it all.
